Doggie Cakes - Video - Fox 13 - Good Day Tampa Bay

Doggie Cakes - Dog Bakery and Boutique in New Port Richey, Florida was a part of Good Day Tampa Bay on Fox 13 this morning. We baked lots of treats to show and give to the doggies that came to be a part of the segment. I think it turned out great.

Thank you - West Pasco Chamber of Commerce for recommending us as a guest. Lot's of friends were on hand and around. Thanks Marilyn Wolf, BS, CPDT - Pet Trainer and Behavior Consultant for bringing her lab rescue dog Molly and for taking care of Cosmo during the segment. Melinda Jonatzke, who is a craft vendor at the New Port Richey monthly Shop 'N Stroll and local resident, brought her dog Bubba.

Gail Armstrong, Interim Exectutive Director, SPCA Suncoast also had a segment to speak about the adoptable dogs and cats at her shelter. She brought Bella, a foster chihuahua who has a broken but healing leg, and will soon be in shape to be adopted.

Frozen Dog Treats Created by Doggie Cakes - New Port Richey, FL

Doggie Cakes - Dog Bakery and Boutique in New Port Richey, Florida introduced a new line of frozen treats for dogs during today's Greater New Port Richey Main Street Strawberry Stroll. Cosmo's Chillers bear the name and lovable mug of our mini-pin Cosmo, and currently come in four flavors and in an eight ounce size. Click to view larger labels.

In honor of today's occasion, Strawberry is of course an inaugural flavor. Blueberry, Banana, and Peanut Butter are also available to pampered pets.

All Doggie Cakes products are made fresh in our store's kitchen. The ingredients are simply low fat all natural yogurt, sour cream, honey, water, and the fruit or peanut butter that makes each unique.

We purchased a freezer for our sales floor to house this newly developed Doggie Cakes line, and to prepare for something completely new to New Port Richey - frozen, organic, raw dog food meals by Primal Pet Foods, Inc. We will also have their frozen buffalo and beef bones with marrow intact. Products by Primal are expected during the week of March 23rd.

Doggie Cakes Listed as a Shopping Destination in Air Trans Airways Inflight Magazine - Go

Doggie Cakes - Dog Bakery and Boutique in New Port Richey, Florida is listed as a shopping destination in the February 2009 - Air Trans Airways Inflight Magazine - GO. There are only four listings total for Tampa, and we made it! We would not have known, but a current customer mentioned it to us today. There is an archive of the magazine online, and we are on page 140.

According to the publisher, Ink Publishing, there are 100,000 copies printed each month, and a potential readership of over two million people. For reference, I looked up the prices for ads. $15,835 for a full page and $5,480 for a quarter page. In this recession, we are thrilled to have received the honor of a mench. Is this the result of our Golden Globes presence? Unknown, but what a nice surprise. Thank you Susan Barnes for writing us into the Tampa shopping section. See text below.

Doggie Cakes Supports the play Sylvia in New Port Richey, FL

Doggie Cakes - Dog Bakery and Boutique is a supporter of the play Sylvia which will be at the Richey Suncoast Theatre in New Port Richey at 8 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2009.

A St. Petersburg Times article, captured the idea of this comedic play very well. Who is Sylvia? Well, she is a talking dog who becomes the other woman of sorts in a shaky marriage. What adds to the humor is that Sylvia looks like a beautiful, young woman.

The Rotary Club of Trinity is bringing the Carrollwood Players to perform Sylvia as a fundraiser for children's charities and organizations in west Pasco, according to Ray Ford, the Rotarian whose wife, Dee, is the award-winning director of the play.

If you go, look for our postcards, with the dog bandanas - and possibly our ad in the program, if we made it in time. In any event, tell your friends, try to see the show, and enjoy a night of fun just around the corner from Doggie Cakes.

Richey Suncoast Theatre, 6239 Grand Blvd., New Port Richey
Tickets: $20, available at the Richey Suncoast Theatre box office from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday, or call (727) 842-6777 and leave a message. You may also call Ray Ford at (727) 375-0811 or any Trinity Rotary member.

Dog Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in Florida - Can Still Be Stopped

Florida House Bill 189 (HB 189) is currently in the Agriculture & Natural Resources Policy Committee. It would eliminate the ban on municipalities passing breed specific legislation (BSL). You can view the proposed legislation and progress here. It would amend this Florida Statute - 767.14. Basically it supports blaming breeds, in general, not specific owners or dogs.

According to the ASPCA website, banning specific breeds does not in itself lessen the number of dog bites or increase public safety where breed neutral laws do. Breed specific legislation is dog discrimination. Increased education on breed types before adoption and continued education through pet and human training are the only things that will protect the public from dogs that cannot socialize well. The ASPCA seeks effective enforcement of breed-neutral laws that hold dog owners accountable for the actions of their animals. They mention online the following that can limit dog aggression or bites.
  • More than 70 percent of all dog bite cases involve unneutered male dogs
  • An unneutered male dog is 2.6 times more likely to bite than is a neutered dog.
  • A chained or tethered dog is 2.8 times more likely to bite than a dog who is not chained or tethered.
  • 97 percent of dogs involved in fatal dog attacks in 2006 were not spayed/neutered:
  • 78 percent were maintained not as pets, but rather for guarding, image enhancement, fighting or breeding.
  • 84 percent were maintained by reckless owners—these dogs were abused or neglected, not humanely controlled or contained, or allowed to interact with children unsupervised.
You can use the distribution list in the below, if you want, to send e-mail.

Here's the physical location: 317 House Office Building, 402 South Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32399-1300, Phone: (850) 488-5465.

Please take the time to write and keep the ban on breed specific legislation in place. Below is a letter that you can use.
Subject: HB 189

Dear Agriculture & Natural Resources Policy Committee Members,

I am asking that you vote against HB 189 so the current state-wide prohibition against municipalities passing breed specific legislation remains in place. Breed specific legislation does not prevent the problems for which it is implemented and you have been responsible enough to recognize that. Thank you. However, not all municipalities will be a forward-thinking. Your vote against HB 189, will ensure the prohibition remains.

Doggie Cakes - Subject of Examiner.com Article

Doggie Cakes - Dog Bakery and Boutique was the subject of an article from Examiner.com today. We met the author, Laura Kepner, at the January - Third Friday Music Series in Safety Harbor, when she visited our vendor booth. She specializes in articles about pets and animals for this source. An excerpt from the much appreciated article is below.
A lovely display of treats caught my eye. Had there not been leashes and collars hanging from the booth, I might not have known that the goodies were actually treats for dogs!
